Terrance Henderson’s Visit

On Wednesday, February 13, 2019, Hammond students were visited by artist and dance troop leader, Terrance Henderson as part of the Christopher Gadsden Wells Endowment for the Arts. Mr. Henderson put on an abbreviated performance alongside one of his former dance students during assembly, and he also performed during several class periods for any arts students or people with free periods during that time.

Mr. Henderson was very engaging and offered students the opportunity to go on stage and try out dancing for themselves. Many students took this opportunity and ran with it.

“I thought it was pretty cool to see someone do something proudly that a lot of people are embarrassed about,” senior Zavier Harrison said.

Henderson emphasized how important he thinks it is to put yourself out there.

“You can spend your time worrying about things, or you can spend your time believing in yourself,” he said.

This resonated with students, and when Henderson asked for volunteers, many students wanted to dance.

Henderson was very encouraging when asked questions about different ways to get involved with dance. He gave insight into the hardships he faced in the industry, such as challenges associated with his body type, race, and gender. Henderson has now carved out a niche market in Columbia and is enjoying lots of success and recognition in his field.
